Older but wiser. At 27, still everything is possible. Will never stop dreaming.

Hands On Manila’s Volunteer Chronicles 2 begins

After the success of Hands On Manila’s Volunteer Chronicles Writing Contest in 2007, HOM and Powerbooks once again launch a writing tilt – this time with a twist. Contestants may now write about their volunteer experience while on vacation or in destinations outside of their resident provinces or countries. This contest is open to anyone, 16 years old and above.
During the launch at Powerbooks Greenbelt, Hands On Manila celebrity-volunteer Marc Nelson shared his own volunteer experiences, which he wrote in the Be Hands On! Inspiring Volunteer StoriesI book. The book was a product of essays from the top 10 winners of the first Volunteer Chronicles contest and 10 personalities who have done volunteer work.
This year, the first prize is P5,000 worth of Powerbooks gift cards, a free trip for two (2) to Boracay via SEAir, free accommodations for two nights at Punta Rosa Resort, and an opportunity to do a Hands On Volunteer Vacations project in Aklan.
The second prize is P3,000 worth of Powerbooks Gift Cards, a free trip for two (2) to Bohol via Cebu Pacific, free accommodations for two nights at Amarela Resort, and an opportunity to do a Hands On Volunteer Vacations project in Bohol.
Lastly, the third prize is P2,000 worth of Powerbooks Gift Cards, free accommodations for two (2) at Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay, and an opportunity to do a Hands On Volunteer Vacations project in Laguna or Batangas

Biggest bad trip ever!
Wala akong internet connection, kung kelan naman me kailangan akong i-submit ke Boss.
Haynakupo!
Waaah!
I just hate SmartBro now....
P.S. After ng ilang beses na pangungulit, me connection na ako uli! Yehey!
I am thinking about clumsiness.
Malaki na ako (plus size and all), ganun pa rin.
"Naku, gagaling din yan after two days..."
"Mawawala din ung pamamaga. The pain will subside..."
The pain is still there, lalo pag malamig ang panahon. Funny, when I complained the little pain to my bestfriend Paul Allan, he showed me his left ankle. "Pareho tayo, sis." There is the obvious umbok, like something inside has been moved from its original position, just like my left ankle.
Great, I literally share the pain with my bes. Hehe!
I still refuse to carry the tray at fastfood restos, lalo pag overloaded ng styro at drinks ung tray. I politely ask someone from the staff to carry the tray for me. I bet you, 100%, na malalaglag ko ung (a) buong tray, or (b) matatapon ang laman ng plastic cups.
Madalas din, I am clumsy with my thought, with my words. I become so Emily Blunt, being unconsciously taklesa. I bite my tongue afterwards. I find excuse being drunk (which is a lame excuse, since I don't exceed two bottles of San Mig Light.... Ganun kasi ako...) or being excessively sleepy (yeah, I am dreamy always).
What about being clumsy in love? Dito, kakanta na lang ako:
You got me trippin, stumbling, flippin, fumbling
Clumsy cuz I'm fallin in love
You got me slippin, tumbling, sinking, fumbling
Clumsy cuz I'm fallin in love
So in love with you
Yes, I am no sylph. About clumsiness, I still don't know if it is a good or bad thing. I think it is best to tip the balance of your self scale once in a while, to touch base...

Musta naman ang bagong lay-out? Salamat sa template ni up4grabs.

Rhodge, Mommy, Daddy with Luna (June 2008)
Tomorrow will be my parents' 34th year of being married.
This year would be different, and also for the rest of the years that would come.
I am hoping that Mommy would maintain her composure.
And yes, she is just hiding her true feeling from us.
With Daddy gone, everything would not be the same again.
When Daddy was diagnosed with cancer, we asked the doctors to give us time na masabi namin kay Mommy ang totoong sakit ni Daddy. But when Daddy got comatosed, we eventually told Mommy the truth, na baka hanggang three to six months na lang si Daddy na makakasama namin. Mas natuwa pa nga siya kasi matagal-tagal na panahon pa daw iyon, kaysa na naka-coma siya that time, tapos bigla siyang nawala sa amin.
Biglang-bigla, at walang paalam.
It has just been two months nung nawala si Daddy, pero parang kahapon lang nangyari ang lahat.
But yes, we have to go on with our lives.
It is raining now, and it is already past 2 PM.
This week will be too hard for our family.

Hehe.
Kahapon lang na-upload ni Fifi, one of the masisipag na Kanlungan volunteers ng Hands On Manila. Salamat Fifi!

Tsaka kalahating kilo ng chicken lollipops care of Magnolia Chicken Station. Thank God for instants, mababawasan ang time ko for the preparation.
Hihi.
And so, pumunta na kami sa parlor ni Miss D sa may kanto. Hala!
Surprise!
Secretly, natutuwa ako kasi my sister is embracing some change in her life.

And yes, I forgot to buy the cake!
Grabe! Parang last year lang ang lahat ng ito!
I have read this beautiful essay on the essence of our waiting. Check it out here.
"The condition of waiting can be analogically described between the two points: the waiter and the waited. The distance between the waiter and the waited is the duration of time where the action is expected to occur. The time between the two points of waiting is crucially indispensable because it is where the expected action occurs."

And thank you Emong for the link to Barthes's dig on the same topic.
"The being I am waiting for is not real. Like the mother's breast for the infant, "I create and re-create it over and over, starting from my capacity to love, starting from my need for it": the other comes here where I am waiting, here where I have already created him/her. And if the other does not come, I hallucinate the other: waiting is a delirium."
***
I am still waiting for the apartment management to send someone that can install the door knob. The past two days had been not good for us. It is scary to think that someone might easily get in through the unlocked door. I was supposed to go to TRANSCOM last night to have my clerance processed but because of the unfixed knob, I postponed this plan.

I hope everyone would come to the poetry book discussion tomorrow at the Ortigas Foundation Building. We will be discussing the chapbook Unto Thee by Mabi David. Pinoypoets will moderate.
Admission is totally free. Unto Thee is available for Php 100 at the UP Press Bookstore in UP Diliman (926-6642) and Filipinas Heritage Library (892-1801). The book will also be made available through Pinoypoets (0918-2442553) and Ortigas Foundation (631-1231) for this book club session.
Plus, I am currently reading the author's blog here.

I still have to wait for next Saturday to watch Dare Duo, the show on QTV Channel 11 hosted b Marc Nelson and Rovilson Fernandez.
Next week's episode will be the second guesting of my Kuyatot on the show. For his first guesting he was the dare-giver. He also acted as a MMDA traffic guy. I found the teaser on Youtube:
And I found a photo for next week's episode:

Si Kuyatot katabi si Akihiro Sato! Waah!!!!!!!!!!

It can never be the same again. The eagerness of waiting has been long gone. What remains is the pain. Truer than itself.
There is a BAGAMUNDO in all of us.

Now That My Father Lies Down Beside Me
(Stanley Plumly)
We lie in that other darkness, ourselves.
There is less than the width of my left hand
between us. I can barely breathe,
but the light breathes easily,
wind on water across our two still bodies.
I cannot even turn to see him.
I would not touch him. Nor would I lift
my arm into the crescent of a moon.
(There is no star in the sky of this room,
only the light fashioning fish along the walls.
They swim and swallow one another.)
I dream we lie under water,
caught in our own sure drift.
A window, white shadow, trembles over us.
Light breaks into a moving circle.
He would not speak and I would not touch him.
It is an ocean under here.
Whatever two we were, we become
one falling body, one breath. Night lies down
at the sleeping center -- no fish, no shadow,
no single, turning light. And I would not touch him
who lies deeper in the drifting dark than life.
*I believe it was Daddy's second night in the hospital when I took this photo using my mobile phone. He didn't want us to see him in his weakest point, but this photo has my Daddy's rare smile. We miss you so much, Daddy.
The NBDB book discussion of Mabi David's Unto Thee was filled with fun and awe. Awe, since it was amazing how Mabi carefully explained the process of placing her poems in order, for the collection.
First, here's the elusive Mabi David:

Some of the points of discussion that I've picked up:
1. Did she find the use of "O," "Thee," or "Unto," as one of her mannerisms when she was writing the poems?
Mabi answered that she grew up in an uber-conservative Catholic family. She used to read the Bible, which utilises these kind of "old words." It was very natural for her to use these kinds of words in her poetry.
2. According to NBDB Executive Director Andrea, it was very obvious that the "creator" is present in each poem included in the collection.
3. Mabi wants her to be "in a specific time, or period." This will be very much familiar with her upcoming poetry book.
4. Someone pointed out that the poet tried to understand the strength or fragility of the inner self.

It was interesting to note that it was the first time for the NBDB to discuss a poetry book in their book club session, and also the first for the Pinoypoets to discuss a collection of poetry. There was an additional excitement that another poet, Conchitina Cruz, was present to take part in the discussion.
Plus: Mabi's take on the event:
The book club meeting yesterday was such a treat. I really enjoyed the discussion. Emong (Raymond de Borja) was a very competent moderator, and the comments and questions, especially of the Pinoypoets, on the limits of perception and the burden of the creator, were thoughtful and provocative. I hope I get to sit in your next meetings – I promise to be less reticent. See you soon!
***
Next stop for the Pinoypoets is the upcoming lecture of Angelo Suarez in August. This is still a part of the group's lecture series for its fifth anniversary.
If you follow this blog, I used to have a big crush with the Suarez. Ngayon, medyo small crush na lang. I'll just make sure to have a picture together with him. Harharhar.
*More photos of the event here.

I'll be watching the Set E plays on June 27, Saturday. Maraming salamat kay Sir Gibbs Cadiz.
Kitakits!
Time to dispatch some books.
Out of the ash
I rise with my red hair
And I eat men like air.
At 2:00 a.m., today, Tropical Depression "FERIA" was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 90 kms Southwest of Subic, Zambales or 150 kms West of Metro Manila (14.3°N 119.6°E) with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph. It is forecast to move West Northwest at 15 kph.
Or else we'll both get wet, and wild. Harhar.
***
Philippine nights are at their shortest and daytime is at their longest around the Summer solstice, which falls on June 21 at 2:00 P.M. (Philippine Standard Time). This is the time when the Sun attains its greatest declination of +23.5 degrees and passes directly overhead at noon for all observers at latitude 23.5 degrees North, which is known as the Tropic of Cancer. This event marks the start of the apparent southward movement of the Sun in the ecliptic.
Stargazers will be having a nice time watching the night sky with the famous Summer Triangle of the stars Vega, Deneb and Altair of the constellations Lyra, Aquila and Cygnus, respectively, being well placed in the eastern horizon before midnight. The bowls of the Big and Small Dipper in Ursa Major and Minor, respectively, stands high above the northern horizon with the body of the constellation Draco, the Dragon winding between them. The grouping of a horseshoe shape stars of the constellation Corona Borealis, the Northern Crown, lies on the north-south meridian with the head of Draco below it. The constellation of Scorpio is positioned above the east-south eastern horizon, while the constellations of Centaurus, the Centaur and Acrux, the Southern Cross is just above the south direction.
A fine display of planets before sunrise will adorn skywatchers as they will see Mars and Venus close to each other and Mercury will be just below them in the eastern horizon this month. On the other hand, Jupiter stands high in the sky together with Neptune and Uranus which will be needing a modest size binocular or telescope to view the Blue-Green and the Greenish planets, respectively.
Saturn, the Ringed Planet, will be glowing at magnitude +1.0 and will be located at the zenith after sunset. It will be located among the background stars of the constellation Leo, the Lion. By using a modest size telescope, it will reveal a diameter of 17.63 arc of a second and Saturnian satellites can sometimes be seen as tiny yellowish beads of light, which lie near the same planes as the rings.
Recent unseen activity makes the annual June Bootid meteor shower worth observing. Normally, the shower is active from June 26 to July 2. Although the shower peaks on the 27th of June, a little or no activity will be expected this year, but conditions for checking are very favorable from the mid-northern latitudes where the radiant is best seen, with an early-setting waxing crescent Moon. The radiant is usefully accessible virtually all night, and all observing techniques can be employed. The shower is derived from the debris ejected by Comet 7P/Pons-Winnecke. The radiant of the shower will originate from the constellation of Bootes, the Herdsman, which lies nearly overhead when darkness falls.

Alam nyo ba na ang salitang Feria ay Latin word for "free day?" Ayon sa aking source (syempre, Wikipedia!), it was a day on which the people, especially the slaves, were not obliged to work, and on which there were no court sessions.
No slave day for me, kung ako ang slave ni Papa Piolo Pascual.

Dear City,
Permit us to refresh your memory: what comes from heaven is always a blessing, the enemy is not the rain. Rain is the subject of prayer, the kind gesture of saints. Dear City, explain your irreverence: in you, rain is a visitor with nowhere to go. Where is the ground that knows only the love of water? What are the passageways to your heart? Pity the water that stays and rises on the streets, pity the water that floods into houses, so dark and filthy and heavy with rats and dead leaves and plastic. How ashamed water is to be what you have made it. What have you done to its beauty, its graceful body in pictures of oceans, its clear face in a glass? We walk home and cannot see our feet in the flood. We forget to thank the gods for their kindness. We look for someone to blame and turn to you, wretched city, because we are men and women of honor, we feed our children three meals a day, we never miss an election. The only explanation is you, dear city. This is the end of our discussion. There is no other culprit.
Programmer Juniffer
Darling, natapos ko na rin. Dyusku, ten thousand years ko itong trinabaho!
Programmer Zoorla
Anech ba 'yan? In English...uban. In British... uban jungle.
Programmer Juniffer
Programmer Zoorla
Dito mo ki-nowd ang Googelyah search engine fighter mo???
Programmer Juniffer
Oo, bakit?
Programmer Zoorla
Eh, punyetang Nokia 3210 itong hayup na celphone mo. Mas matanda pa 'to sa lola ko.
Programmer Juniffer
((presses a button on the celphone))
Programmer Zoorla
Aba! May Safari browser ka, ineng! Mac baga.
Programmer Juniffer
In English...Macamandag!
Programmer Zoorla
May ganon?
((types)) Where is my crush Bonjobi... ngayon?
((enter))
One result daw, o. "Bonjobi is going to the west wing comfort room of the second floor of building D-3, approximately 30 meters from your location. He just had merienda with Barrakus, the operations manager, who is wearing a yellow summer dress by Kashieca. Bonjobi is in love with Barrakus, but you're not supposed to know that."
Juniffer... echosera itong search engine mo.
Programmer Juniffer
Maganda kayang pangalan ng search engine 'yan?
Programmer Zoorla
Echosera?
Programmer Juniffer
Oo. Mayroong Ubuntu, Squidoo, Twitter, Google, Django, Voxli, Phlook, Plurk... 'di ba parang mga tanga? Pero memorable ang mga pangalan kase kakaiba.
Programmer Zoorla
Eh kung Chorvah na lang?
Programmer Juniffer
Hmmm... Chorvah... "We will soon be releasing the beta version of our Chorvah search engine very soon. Chorvah's revolutionary search protocols and algorithms guarantee accurate results everytime. Eventually, users will equate Chorvah with accurate, relevant and up-to-date web searching. Complete your web experience with Chorvah."
Maganda....
Programmer Juniffer
Or, in English. "Log on to the Web. Just Chorvah it! Did you Chorvah it already? I love, love Chorvah."
Programmer Zoorla
O, sya. babalik na ako sa trabaho. Basta kapag yumaman ka diyan, huwag mo akong kalimutan.
Programmer Juniffer
Ano nga pala ang project mo ngayon?
Programmer Zoorla
Social networking site. Kakalabanin ang Fezbook.
Programmer Juniffer
Anong title?
Programmer Zoorla
Chenelyn.

I am still into Mabi David's Unto Thee. Now That My Father Lies Down Beside Me), Heather Ramsdell (Lost Wax), at Tess Gallagher (Moon Crossing Bridge).

Bahagi ang mga dula sa set na "Life is a Trap (Three Plays in Search of Escape)."
***
Paigan ni Liza Magtoto, director: Sigrid Bernardo
Fagen ("Paigan"), an Afro-American soldier who deserted his camp to fight side-by-side with the Filipino revolutionaries, is wanted by the Americans for the price of $600-- a hefty sum at the time. Desperate for money, Pedring captures Fagen and is set to behead him when Tacio, a former comrade, and the Filipina wife of the captive beseech him. The play explores a possible scenario posed by historical essays on the true-to-life story of the guerilla fighter who defected to our side during the Filipino-American War.

In the play, this joke just came so naturally.)
And how to escape boredom that is history in this play? Through songs (using folk song tunes), dances, hilarious delivery of lines by the actors. Kudos to the four actors of this play, napakahusay nila.
Sa pamamagitan nito, the playwright has presented an examination of the Filipino history and of the present: Bakit ang kapwa mo Filipino, hindi maintindihan ang mga ipinaglalaban mo para sa bayan?

Hate Restaurant is a command. Hate restaurants. Hate them. This play follows the trials and tribulations of a small pancake restaurant during the biggest breakfast of the year. Head chef and restauranteur Lucille is incapacitated after an unfortunate encounter with a giant rat, leaving waiters Louise and Billy and mild-mannered kitchen-hand Toby to handle a booking of 70 businessmen who are suspiciously picky in their requirements.

Tim Burton's characters breathed to life.
Lucille died from what: wheat flour contamination, exhaustion, or guilt? Namatay nga ba siya talaga?
At bakit may-I-come-back ang drama ng higanteng daga? Bakit? BAKIT!!!?????

Isang Araw sa Karnabal ni Nicolas B. Pichay, director: Chris Millado
Zaldy and Toni, two friends whose family members have been the victims of forced disappearances, amble along a jologs Karnabal. They grope in the dark shadow of a world weighed by uncertainties and fear. Engaged in the ritual of forgetting, the two friends' undefined relationship adds a nagging ambiguity in their lives making it difficult for them to define a future. Hope, for them can be a tricky sleight of hand; a slow and treacherous rickity ride to hell.

Jovito Palparan?
How bittersweet.
These two actors seemed to know na sa kanila nakasalalay ang pagiging matagumpay ng script ni G. Pichay, and they did their parts exceptionally well.
At ang roller coaster ride! How imaginative!
They know that they need to face their problems, kahit pagkatapos nito ay samu't saring mga tanong. Higit lalong walang-katapusang mga tanong.
***
Baka may sagot dito.
***
Cut both ways.
***
It will be on its second week starting this Tuesday. Tunghayan ang schedule dito.
Sequestered Writing
Carolyn Forche
Horses were turned loose in the child's sorrow. Black and roan, cantering through snow
The way light fills the hand with light, November with graves, infancy with white.
White. Given lilacs, lilacs disappear. Then low voices rising in walls.
The way they withdrew from the child's body and spoke as if it were not there.
What ghost comes to the bedside whispering You?
-- With its no one without its I --
A dwarf ghost? A closet of empty clothes?
Ours was a ghost who stole household goods. Nothing anyone would miss.
Supper plates. Apples. Barbed wire behind the house.
At the end of the hall, it sleepwalks into a mirror wearing mother's robe.
A bedsheet lifts from the bed and hovers. Face with no face. Come here.
The bookcase knows, and also the darkness of books. Long passages into,
Endless histories toward, sleeping pages about. Why else toss gloves into a grave?
A language that once sent ravens through firs. The open world from which it came.
Words holding the scent of an asylum fifty years. It is fifty years, then.
The child hears from within: Come here and know, below
And unbeknownst to us, what these fields had been.
At dahil jan, up na ang aming revamped, all-new, all-fresh, bonggang-bonggang official Pinoypoets website!
